We have been hearing a lot about how some PS4 games will include an option to upgrade to PS5. Sometimes that feature will be free. Other times you will need to pay for the PS5 version of the game. Regardless, you probably have a lot of questions about how that upgrade process works. Now, Sony has provided steps for how to upgrade PS4 games to PS5 versions.
How Do You Upgrade PS4 Games to PS5 Versions?
Sony offered details in a post regarding the upgrades. There are two cases. In the first, you might be upgrading a PS4 game you own on a disc with the full version of the PS5 console that includes an optical drive. In the second, you might be upgrading a digital PS4 game on the digital-only PS5 console or the full version of the console. Sony offered steps for both situations. From the post:
Upgrade an eligible PS4 game on disc on a PS5 console with a disc drive
Sign in to your existing account on your PS5 console (or create an account).
- Insert the eligible PS4 game disc.
- Go to the game hub for the PS4 game.
- Select the upgrade offer on the game hub and review the upgrade offer.
- Select Download (or purchase with the discount price) to download/purchase content.
- After the download is complete, you can play the PS5 digital game by inserting the PS4 game disc. You will need to keep the disc inserted each time to play the game.
Upgrade an eligible PS4 digital game on a PS5 console with a disc drive or PS5 Digital Edition
To upgrade an eligible digital PS4 game you already own to the digital PS5 version:
- Sign in to your existing account on your PS5 console.
- Find the PS5 game in PlayStation Store, or by Search, and go to the game hub for the PS5 game.
- Select the upgrade offer on the game hub and review the upgrade offer.
- Select Download (or purchase with the discount price) to download/purchase content.
- After the download is complete, you can play the PS5 game.
