Fortnite is available on several platforms (excluding the Switch, of course) and even on mobile devices. You can play it practically anywhere. Epic Games have made sure of that, which is one of the reasons it’s doing so well across the board — that, and it’s free, of course. But there’s one frontier it hadn’t yet made it to, and where it’s landed now might shock you. One YouTuber has endeavored to get the game up and running on an old Panasonic boombox from the ’80s, and you can see it running in the video from YouTuber My Mate Vince below. Talk about a blast from the past.
My Mate Vince somehow took the old boombox, which released 34 years ago, and hooked it up to an Xbox One X. How, you ask? Well, this particular boombox actually included a miniature TV screen. We’ll let Vince himself, the mastermind behind the project, explain:
“The TV is a black & white CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) and Fortnite is being played from the Xbox One X which is then transmitting the picture and audio over the air as a RF signal. The Boombox is picking it up as an analogue signal via the antenna. The picture is far better than I thought it would be.”
The game is in black and white as you can tell, but it’s still very much playable, even though there’s a noticeable drop in fidelity. The cool part here is that it’s actually able to be played on the boombox to start with. When’s the last time you saw something this cool, anyway? We’re willing to bet it’s been a long time. And while we may not suggest jumping online with this boombox (if you happen to have one lying around) it’s still an interesting achievement that anyone can appreciate.
It does make us wonder, however, what’s next for Fortnite. A calculator? Don’t be so sure it can’t happen. Technology is amazing, after all.
