Wii U Firmware Update 5.5.3 Is the First Wii U Update in Over a Year

Nintendo has officially released the first Wii U update in over a year. Wii U firmware update 5.5.3 is the first update for Nintendo’s previous home console this year and it arrived without any preceding announcement from the Japanese publisher. If you still happen to own a Wii U and use it regularly, it’s good to know that Nintendo still intends to update the system for now.

The Wii U firmware update 5.5.3 went live last night on September 3, 2018 so if you’re reading this, you can download and install it right this minute. The update itself isn’t that huge in download size nor is it changing or adding anything drastic to the system. Its official patch notes from the Nintendo website are actually small in size.

  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience

And that’s it for this update. It seems that, despite the long wait since the most recent one, this update is simply meant to do the typical adjustments and fixes that you would expect from an update. It is unsure if Nintendo plans to continue implementing the occasional updates for the Wii U.

It’s worth noting that the update before the Wii U firmware update 5.5.3 released on July 17, 2017. It has been well over a year since then so it remains to be seen if the same situation will occur next year in 2019 or if this will be the last update for the tragically doomed console indefinitely.

Regardless, Nintendo’s latest platform, the Nintendo Switch, has a lot of changes and new additions on the horizon with the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch Online Service later this month. You can find more info about that service and its NES games right here.
