World of Tanks: Mercenaries: Exploring Its Development

The narrative designer of the Mercenaries expansion that came on World of Tanks for consoles talked about the idea behind the whole initiative in one of his interviews. The expansion brings a lot of new stuff to the game along with many new characters. All these new stuff have their foundation to the whole history of the world.

In one of his recent interviews with ShackNews, the narrative designer of Mercenaries, Darold Higa, disclosed insights of this new update. The players themselves gave them the idea of adding more tanks to the World of Tanks. As they were aiming at the game’s multiplayer mode, the characters came naturally, as he stated to ShackNews.

“We’re all console players. A single-player experience has always been a part when you have a multiplayer game. The community kept saying ‘hey, we want more tanks’ and they reacted very favorably to the fact we introduced characters in War Stories. The tanks are still the main focus and our characters, but now we can bring in this universe that has these colorful and cool and interesting characters. And the players like that! That’s how it kind of expanded.”

He focused a lot on the history behind the whole expansion using examples from what had happened to highlight that the expansion is not far from the truth. The players get to experience real-life events that occurred a long time ago and see what it was from the inside of the game. Higa stated the following to ShackNews:

“Historically it was done. For instance, after the war, the French had to fight a conflict in Algeria and they had a bunch of surplus of American chassis but it didn’t have a big enough gun. They had a tank gun that was more suited to what they needed because of that they ended up hybridizing two of these tanks. The Israelis did this too.”

The World of Tanks new expansion on consoles is something. Players love it already, and if you have not tried it yet, you should definitely do it. The characters, the historic missions you have to go through teach you a lot and make the game more exciting.
