WWE 2K Battlegrounds Release Date, Cover, and Pre-Order Details Arrive

After weeks of waiting, and days of teases, the new WWE 2K Battlegrounds cover and game trailer have arrived. In addition, there’s now an official release date, which will bring the game out in the next several months. Here’s what we’ve seen and learned as of Wednesday’s new reveals.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds Cover Details

We first learned a few months ago that 2K wouldn’t be creating a WWE 2K21 video game this year. That had fans hopeful that the creators behind the series would be working hard on the next installment. However, soon after the news, a new game was revealed called WWE 2K Battlegrounds. Based on the first video trailer, it featured more of a cartoon fighting style similar to Street Fighter mixed with NBA Street.

On Wednesday, the WWE 2K Battlegrounds cover arrived, which puts legends Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock right at the front of the mayhem. Each is shown with their fist lit up, most likely from a power-up move.

Behind them, we see other stars including Kofi Kingston, Roman Reigns, John Cena, The Fiend Bray Wyatt, and Rhonda Rousey. There are also more legends including Yokozuna, Andre the Giant, and The Undertaker. The ring is set outdoors in the woods with fans watching from wooden shed homes. There’s even an alligator in the ring, with fireworks and a helicopter flying overhead.

New game trailer arrives online

In addition to the official game cover, the also released a new WWE 2K Battlegrounds trailer. It checks in at about a minute and 15 seconds, showcasing the various crazy aspects of this sort of game.

A helicopter scene starts the trailer off. Daniel Bryan’s theme song plays briefly as he jumps out of the copter down towards the ring to land a punch. In other scenes, we see superstars powered up and throwing punches, dealing with an in-ring ram, and smashing one another with various weapons.

The trailer shows off a number of the competitors who will be on the roster including those mentioned above. We also see a number of competitors not shown on the cover above. They include Braun Strowman, Shawn Michaels, Sgt. Slaughter, Nikki Bella, Asuka, and Kane.

There are other screenshots live at the 2K website which show off a number of other competitors such as Rey Mysterio, Big Show, and Samoa Joe.

Release date, pre-order, and other details

Based on the trailer and other new information provided, the WWE 2K Battlegrounds release date is September 18, 2020. That puts it out earlier than last year’s WWE 2K20 timeframe, as that game arrived on Oct. 22, 2019.

The game will be available on the Sony PlayStation 4, Microsoft Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. Costs for the game are lower than most new games too. There will be a Standard Edition priced at $39.99 and a Digital Deluxe Edition $49.99. Each includes different pre-order bonus content.

However, pre-ordering both of those will get gamers the Edge Totally Awesome Pre-Order Pack. That allows gamers to unlock Edge for use in WWE 2K Battlegrounds as a playable wrestler.

There’s no word yet on whether or not the new game will also transition to the next-gen PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X consoles slated for release later this year.

A number of wrestling personalities retweeted the trailer on Wednesday, including Jerry “The King” Lawler. He revealed that in-game commentary will come from himself along with Mauro Ranallo, providing extra fun.

We’re also seeing based on additional details, there will be in-game currency and “optional in-game purchases” to unlock additional content.

In addition, the game will involve being able to play online with up to eight players. However, that will involve having a PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold membership in order to participate.
