GameStop Executive Discusses the Importance of Next Gen Disc Drives

The advancement of technology means that we can experience games which are more realistic and immersive from generation to generation with both the PlayStation and Xbox consoles. But it also raises questions about the future—and concerns. Are you among the players who originally worried about whether or not there would be next gen disc drives? You will be pleased to hear that GameStop recently commented on this issue.

What the GameStop Executive Had to Say About Next Gen Disc Drives

Specifically, the comments came from GameStop’s chief customer officer Frank Hamlin, who was speaking with GameSpot. Hamlin talked both about why gamers care about physical discs, and Microsoft and Sony’s understanding of the matter.

Hamlin stated, “I think both Microsoft and Sony are keenly aware that the consumer needs that optionality. We’re very much a believer in helping our customers sell them a physical game when they want it … It’s much like a collectable. They like the collectibility and trophy on the shelf. That tangibility is something that’s extremely important for the right game experience. Not giving the customers the privilege of having that is something I think both Sony and Microsoft are aware would be a foolish thing to do.”

The other reason a lot of gamers feel uneasy about the idea of switching entirely over to digitally-owned content has to do with ownership. First of all, what happens if a game is de-listed? Players worry about whether their purchases will still be accessible. Secondly, what if your internet connection is down and you need to download a game you own in the cloud? One should not need to be online just to access a game one already owns.

GameStop has commented about the importance of physical games.

While GameStop’s comments are reassuring, they still do not really reveal anything about Sony’s and Microsoft’s long-term plans. It would be nice to think they will continue to honor the demand for physical discs, but there are no guarantees. And we can certainly see that there is more and more of a push away from physical and toward digital streaming and purchasing. That pressure isn’t going to just go away anytime soon.
