Fallout 4: New Vegas is one of the largest and most ambitious mod projects currently being worked on. The mod’s dev team post regular updates for their fan community, keeping them up-to-date with their most recent progress. The team’s most recent dev update has addressed the console version of Fallout 4. According to the team, they have no plans to ever bring Fallout 4: New Vegas to consoles.
New Fallout 4: New Vegas Dev Update
While it is possible now for mods to come to the Fallout 4 console versions, there are major limitations. As a result, most major mod projects simply cannot come to consoles. It looks as though Fallout 4: New Vegas will fall into that category. It’s worth noting that many long-term mods began development before mods could be implemented on consoles, meaning that they were never designed to be compatible. However, the dev team explain very clearly why they will never put the mod on consoles.
“To begin with,” states the dev update; “one needs to understand the console modding requirements. Users on consoles have a maximum filesize for all of their mods – combined. That sits at 2GB of mod content. Unfortunately, F4NV rides in – even in its current, unfinished state – at well over 2GB. Given the number of new assets we need to bring the Mojave to life in the new engine, this is simply the reality of the mod for us.”
Another major factor is that there are different limitations on the different console platforms. Sony has imposed a much harsher set of restrictions; the company will not allow mods on the PlayStation 4 which introduce new assets to the game. “As such, they need to only use content already existing in Fallout 4. While this has birthed some fantastic mods for PlayStation users that rely on the base Fallout 4 content, this means that mods such as F4NV – which require new assets to work – simply cannot be released for PlayStation 4 users.”
