Tomorrow, the currently-available Armed and Dangerous on World’s Edge game mode will no longer be playable in Apex Legends. In its place, players will be able to return to the game’s original map in a new mode; the upcoming Apex Legends Kings Canyon After Dark game mode. Like all the modes in the Grand Soirée Arcade Event, this mode will only be available to play for two days. (The 24th and 25th of January.)
The Apex Legends Kings Canyon After Dark Game Mode
The Apex Legends Kings Canyon After Dark mode is the penultimate new game mode in the Grand Soirée event’s roster. When it concludes, its replacement will be the final new game mode; DUMMIEs Big Day. After that, none of the new game modes which featured in the Grand Soirée will be playable. It’s currently unknown if Respawn have any plans to bring them back in the future, though it does seem likely. (Indeed, the Grand Soirée event does seem like an opportunity for the studio to test things and gauge audience interest in different modes.)
Whatever the case, Kings Canyon After Dark will allow players to return to the classic original Apex Legends map. However, this will be a version of the Kings Canyon map which takes place at night. This isn’t the first time that a night variant of Kings Canyon has been playable in-game; back in October, Respawn added a mode called Shadowfall as part of the Fight or Fright Collection Event. That Halloween-themed mode also took place on a nighttime Kings Canyon map, although it also featured many more extra or variant mechanics.
It currently seems as though Kings Canyon After Dark won’t feature all the extra parts that were in Shadowfall. Rather, it will just be standard Apex Legends but on the variant map. However, it’s possible that Respawn is keeping certain details under wraps. Shadowfall was a 32-player solo mode which had all fallen Legends return as members of a ‘Shadow Squad’. These revenants had no weapons or abilities, but could climb walls, had greater speed, and a very powerful melee attack. This Shadow Squad had to hunt down all surviving players, and the last ten players alive formed a team to try and escape the map.
