Arc the Lad R Coming to Smartphones, Is Set 10 Years After Arc the Lad II

Sony’s smartphone subsidiary ForwardWorks has officially announced Arc the Lad R for smartphones in Japan. We recently covered how a smartphone entry in the dormant Sony franchise was coming and now we have a slew of information regarding it. Timeline-wise, this latest title in the series takes place 10 years after the events of Arc the Lad II on the original PlayStation.

Following the Great Collapse 10 years prior in which half the world’s civilizations were wiped out, players will play through Arc the Lad R as a young man named Haruto. As a member of a vigilante group looking to restore civilization, he meets a young girl named Mizuha after the events of a “certain incident.” Together, they will encounter a “grand story.”

If you are worried about previous heroes returning in Arc the Lad R, fret not. Familiar faces are confirmed to be returning in the game as playable characters. The gameplay for the mobile game will be similar to the original Arc the Lad games, focusing on tactical RPG battles. The game will have simplified controls for moving around the grid-based map and attacking enemies. Players will need to customize their teams to fit their preferences.

As characters in your party grow in Arc the Lad R, you’ll have the opportunity to power them up and even evolve them through the Spirit Board. There are other features that will be included in the game as extra content like the Arena, Hunter’s Guild, and Underground Ruins. Characters are drawn in a chibi art style unlike the original Arc the Lad series as seen in the trailer above.

Arc the Lad R has yet to be announced for the West and is only coming to Japanese smartphones currently. As we wait for an official announcement from Sony, check out our previous coverage for the smartphone game.
