Barcelona-Based Studio to Make Lords of the Fallen 2

It’s been a long time coming, but the news is finally here about “Lords of the Fallen 2.” On September 8, game developer CI Games stated that there have production changes for the game — again. The studio also announced minor details that hint at what’s to come for fans.

After years of bouncing around from different developers, “Fallen 2” seems to have found a home. This time, it’s staying close to CI Games. In the studio’s press release, it announced the arrival of a new developer — one that CI Games itself created. Hexworks is now here to carry out the vision of the game and bring it to life.

Getting to this point, though, has been a hassle for the team. The original “Lords of the Fallen” came out in October 2014. Production for the sequel began in 2015, with Deck13 — the studio who developed the first game. However, a few years later, CI Games replaced Deck13 with Defiant Studios, set to start from scratch.

The switch came in 2018 and things seemed to be on the right track. That is, until the next year when CI Games parted ways with Defiant, citing “inadequate execution” and low quality work — causing tension between the two studios.

Hexworks, which CI Games stated has been working on “Fallen 2” for the past six months, is a small startup. As of now, there are only 25 employees, but the company shows promise — especially with a large studio backing it. Fans are now hopeful that this switch will be the last and that the game is closer than ever.

Emerging Details

“Lords of the Fallen 2” will mark the first release for Hexworks. It’s a potentially risky move, but this path lets CI Games stick to its creative vision more so than working with Deck13 — who developed games like “The Surge 2” — or Defiant.

Like “The Surge 2,” the “Fallen” series comprises of role-playing games (RPGs), where you immerse yourself in a fantasy world. Here, the medieval realm comes to life where fallen gods and leaders can turn against you. Fighting your way through lords and enemies to survive is the way to succeed in this world.

According to the press release, “Fallen 2” seeks to be a bit darker than its predecessor. Still, the studios are staying true to the RPG nature of the game and adding some difficulty to the combative side of things. CI Games also stated they’re taking a more “indie approach” to the sequel.

As for a release date, no news has emerged yet. However, since Hexworks has been working on it for six months, things seem headed in the right direction. It’s set to be available for next-gen consoles like the PS5 as well as PC platforms.

New details will likely come soon with trailers and release dates looming. As for now, if you’re eager to play, you can pick up the first game for the PS4, Xbox One and PC as well as iOS and Android devices.

Working Towards Sturdy Development

The main issue that “Lords of the Fallen 2” has faced is a lack of collaboration. The developers have seemingly not met eye to eye with CI Games and the partnerships fell apart. Now, with a developer of its own, the studio should be able to get the game on the right track. It needs this stability to continue throughout its release.
