Why PS5 Demand at Launch May Not Be as High as Sony Hoped

Not that long ago, we were hearing price predictions for the PlayStation 5 which would have the next-gen console selling at around $600. But more recently, we’ve been hearing more modest price predictions reflecting a lower PS5 demand at launch. Some analysts now believe that the price could be as low as $450. This may seem counterintuitive, as we could be looking at a lower supply of units owing to manufacturing delays related to COVID-19. So what would drive demand down so low?

Factors Bringing Down PS5 Demand at Launch

There are two main reasons why demand for PS5 at launch could be muted. The first is that a lot of people are struggling to make ends meet right now. As a result, they do not necessarily have $600 (or even $450) on hand to purchase a next gen console by the end of this year.

The other reason is that a lot of the games which are coming out for PS5 around the time of its launch also will be available to play on PS4. For that reason, many gamers will be tempted just to keep playing under existing platforms. If you are curious, here are the games which we currently know are heading to PS5:

  • Godfall
  • Quantum Error
  • Gods & Monsters
  • Gothic Remake
  • Outriders
  • Rainbow Six Quarantine
  • The Lord of the Rings: Gollum
  • Watch Dogs: Legion
  • Dying Light 2
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • WRC 9
  • Lords of the Fallen 2
  • MicroMan

With the combined factors just discussed restraining demand for PS5 when the new console launches, it does seem entirely possible that the price could be as low as $450.
