Canadian PlayStation Gamers Will Now Pay Taxes on Digital Purchases

Are you a PlayStation gamer in Canada? If so, you have not had to pay taxes on your digital purchases from the PlayStation Store before. But now, all of that is changing. Soon, you will have to pay a 15% tax on any purchase you make from Sony. Why the change for Canadian PlayStation gamers? Let’s take a closer look.

Games Will Cost More Now for Canadian PlayStation Gamers

The reason you have not had to pay taxes on your digital purchases from the PlayStation Store in the past is because Sony doesn’t have any locations inside Canadian borders. Sony still doesn’t have Canadian offices, but there has been a policy change. The relevant exemption is going away next year starting on June 1st. At that point, whether a vendor has a physical presence in Canada or not, they will need to charge the 15% tax on all purchases. The additional tax revenue will help fund a childcare system.

So, it is annoying having to pay these taxes on digital purchases, but at least the money will go toward a worthy cause. But with new games costing $90 already, it will be harder than ever for a lot of Canadians to save up for the games they want.
