Sony Patent Leads to PS5 Pro Speculation

Gamers are excited by a Sony patent that turned up that seems to point toward the possibility of a PS5 Pro model. Let’s take a closer look at the PS5 Pro speculation as well as the patent that inspired it to see what the future might hold in store.

The PS5 Pro Speculation is Inspired by a Sony Patent

The patent in question was filed in January 2019 and was published at the end of July this year. The title is, “Scalable Game Console CPU/GPU Design for Home Console and Cloud Gaming.”

The abstract says, “In a multi-GPU simulation environment, frame buffer management may be implemented by multiple GPUs rendering respective frames of video, or by rendering respective portions of each frame of video. One of the GPUs controls HDMI frame output by virtue of receiving frame information from the other GPU(s) and reading out complete frames through a physically connected HDMI output port. Or, the outputs of the GPUs can be multiplexed together.”

That’s right—this possible console would incorporate multiple GPUs and CPUs. Could this possibly be a description of a PS5 Pro? That is what a lot of gamers seem to think, judging by recent tweets.

Whatever the case may be, it certainly sounds like a cool design concept. And it does seem plausible that this could be the foundation for a PS5 Pro. But it is important to keep in mind that PS5 Pro speculation is just that—speculation. A patent does not prove anything.
