Cory Barlog’s Plans for God of War DLC Were Too Big

Following the release of God of War, there was widespread speculation among fans over whether the game would get DLC. Given the quality of the storytelling and gameplay design in the title which went on to win Game of the Year at the Game Awards, most fans were hoping to see DLC of some kind. However, the prospect has become less and less likely as time has passed. Now, Cory Barlog, the game’s director, has revealed that he did actually plan DLC, but that his plans were proved too large to work as DLC and were set aside.

What Cory Barlog Wanted to Do For God of War DLC

Cory Barlog was recently interviewed by Kinda Funny, and among the topics he discussed was his plans for God of War DLC. The game did receive some post-launch content, such as the Photo Mode and New Game Plus. However, it never received any true DLC or other major new expansions. Speaking on the topic of DLC, Barlog says; “I had a really fun idea for a DLC that I only regret because I would love to have done that, but it was too ambitious.

God of War DLC Plans Were Too Large

According to the director, there was a proposal at some stage for God of War DLC. It would have been a fairly large expansion featuring a standalone story campaign, similar perhaps to Uncharted: Lost Legacy. However, it apparently proved to be too large for what the studio felt could fit reasonably into DLC. As a result, it was never developed; “Rightfully so,” continues Barlog; “everybody said, dude, this is crazy, this isn’t DLC, this is a little too big.”

Barlog doesn’t go into detail about what story the DLC would have told. Certainly, the most recent God of War left all manner of side-stories and mysteries which could prove fascinating standalone stories. However, a major DLC would also presumably delay development of the next game. Given that the core story of Kratos and Atreus was wrapped up nicely ready for the next instalment, it may be that Santa Monica Studios decided to just focus on delivering the next major title.
