Cyberpunk 2077 is Finally Returning to the PlayStation Store

Cyberpunk 2077 has had no shortage of troubles since release, and perhaps the most significant was the game’s complete removal from the PlayStation Store in late-December, shortly after its launch. Now, after six months, Sony is finally allowing Cyberpunk 2077 to return to the PlayStation Store.

Following its deeply-troubled launch, Cyberpunk 2077 was so bug-ridden (particularly on last-gen consoles) that Sony took an extraordinary measure; removing the game completely from the PlayStation Store. They even went so far as to offer refunds to those who had bought it. Since then, the game hasn’t been available to buy on Sony’s digital storefront. Just last month, CD Projekt CEO Adam Kicinski told shareholders that the company was waiting a decision from Sony.

“We are still in discussions and with every patch the game gets better and there is a visible progress,” he said; “but as we said the decision is an exclusive decision of Sony, so we are waiting for the information about the fact that they took the decision to bring back the game.”

Now, it seems that Sony has done just that, but not without some caveats. Next week, Cyberpunk 2077 will finally be returning to the PlayStation Store. However, Sony is warning PS4 users in particular against buying the game. “Users will continue to experience performance issues with the PS4 edition while CD Projekt Red continues to improve stability across all platforms,” the company told IGN; “SIE recommends playing the title on PS4 Pro or PS5 for the best experience.”

Sales data released since Cyberpunk 2077’s launch indicate that, despite all its problems, the game was still a financial success. However, the company’s revenues were up by only 2% in the first three months of 2021 compared to last year. While the game may not have flopped per se, there is little doubt that it could have sold far better, had the launch not been so terrible. With its return to the PlayStation Store, the game now has a fresh chance to win over PlayStation users.
