Will Cyberpunk 2077 Feature Online Multiplayer of Any Kind?

With Fallout 76 coming out later this year as a major RPG title with online multiplayer; is there any possibility that Cyberpunk 2077 could also feature any multiplayer functionality? Surprisingly, the answer may actually be yes. However, if it does, it’s highly unlikely to be as core a part of the game as it will be for Fallout 76.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Multiplayer Possibilities

Thus far, CD Projekt Red hasn’t publicly shown any gameplay of Cyberpunk 2077. Nearly an hour of gameplay was shown at E3, but only to journalists and other industry professionals, behind closed doors. As such, very little is currently known about how the game will actually play. Given that CD Projekt Red has chosen to shift to a first-person perspective for the first time, it’s possible that the studio is considering other firsts, and multiplayer actually appears to be one possibility.

Cyberpunk 2077 Could Actually Feature a Multiplayer Component

CD Projekt Red has not historically made any multiplayer games. Their biggest series; The Witcher franchise, has always been a single-player experience. Indeed, that was the expectation among fans when the story trailer was debuted at E3. In actual fact, however, CD Projekt Red may seriously be considering multiplayer of some sort. What’s important to note, however, is that if it does incorporate multiplayer, it will be an added feature that will reportedly not be present at launch.

“We have multiplayer in R&D,” stated Patrick Mills, Cyberpunk 2077’s Quest Designer, while speaking in a recent interview; “but the game we’re shipping to you, the game you’re going to buy is the single-player experience. That’s really what we’re concentrating on now, the single-player RPG experience. That’s what we want to nail down before we start looking at any of these other things.”

While it’s interesting to know that the studio is considering single-player at all, it will likely be reassuring to many that the game will always remain a single-player experience. It’s unknown what sort of multiplayer the studio might be looking at for Cyberpunk, but it seems likely that, if it does ever launch that it will be far smaller in scope than something like Fallout 76.
