Copies of the Original Cyberpunk Tabletop RPG Are Selling For Hundreds of Dollars

CD Projekt Red has made a habit of making games based on existing material. For instance, their hugely successful Witcher series is based on the Witcher novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. You may not be familiar with the source for Cyberpunk 2077, however, because the game is based on a tabletop role-playing game called Cyberpunk 2020, originally released in 1988. Many elements of Cyberpunk 2077, such as the character stats, were derived from that old tabletop game.

Cyberpunk 2077 and Cyberpunk 2020

With the debut of Cyberpunk 2077’s latest story trailer, fans have gotten very excited about the impending release of the game. Some fans have started seeking out copies of Cyberpunk 2020, to see the game on which Cyberpunk 2077 is based. Sensing opportunity, the owners of some old copies of the now decades-old tabletop game have started selling them online. They aren’t selling them cheaply either. Copies are selling for hundreds of dollars, even over one thousand in some cases. However, even if you’re deeply set on getting your hands on a copy of the game, you definitely shouldn’t pay hundreds of dollars for it, for one very good reason. The game isn’t actually out-of-print!

Copies of Cyberpunk 2020 Are Selling Online For Hundreds of Dollars

People selling the game online, and apparently a lot of interested fans as well, appear to under the impression that the 80s RPG must be out-of-print. While few games of such age are, Cyberpunk 2020 is one of those few. The game is published by R. Talsorian Games, and on their website, you can pick up a new copy of Cyberpunk 2020 for just $30.

When the publisher became aware of the recent spate of online sales, they published a statement online; “Word has reached us that people are selling Cyberpunk 2020 on Amazon for $300. This is ridiculous. It is still in print and on the company website for $30.00. Please feel free to buy our books anywhere you like, but please don’t you or your friends get ripped off. Spread the word.”

So, if you want to get your hands on a copy of the original Cyberpunk tabletop RPG, check it out here. Don’t needlessly pay hundreds of dollars to someone selling it elsewhere!
