Detroit: Become Human Outpaced Heavy Rain by Over 20% In Its First Month

Quantic Dream’s latest game, Detroit: Become Human, has enjoyed a very successful first month. The game has already surpassed one million units sold, and cemented itself as Quantic Dream’s most successful launch ever. Their previous most successful game was Heavy Rain, and although Detroit’s review scores were slightly lower on average, the game is outperforming Heavy Rain in almost every area.

Detroit: Become Human’s First Month Performance

The most recent figures released by the industry-tracking firm The NPD Group, who track game sales in the US, show that Detroit: Become Human was the third bestselling game for the month of May; despite launching in the month’s final week. The game has since become Quantic Dream’s fastest-selling game ever.

Detroit Become Human Has Outpaced Heavy Rain's Sales Growth by Over 20%

Mat Piscatella, an analyst with The NPD Group, stated that; “Launch month sales of Detroit: Become Human represent a record high for developer Quantic Dream. [Detroit had] sales growth of over 20 percent when compared to [Quantic Dream’s] previous launch month best-seller, Heavy Rain.”

Detroit: Become Human was only outsold in the US in May by God of War (#2) and State of Decay 2 (#1). God of War has sold extremely well ever since its release. Meanwhile, State of Decay 2 is itself an Xbox One exclusive, but it carries much greater brand recognition than Detroit; Quantic Dream’s latest game is a standalone title rather than a sequel. The game has also enjoyed success in markets where Quantic Dream had previously struggled to find a foothold. The game has retained a spot in the top 10 for Japan’s sales charts. Detroit actually outsold Heavy Rain’s entire lifetime sales in Japan in its first week in the country.

Detroit: Become Human’s review scores were, in general, slightly lower than those of Heavy Rain. As such, many analysts were uncertain how the game would perform. As it turns out, the game appears to have swiftly found an audience, and if this trend continues, it looks set to exceed Heavy Rain’s sales on every count.
