When Bethesda revealed that the Brotherhood of Steel would feature in Fallout 76, some fans got rather upset about perceived changes to the game’s canon. As it turns out, the game’s explanation actually meshes relatively well with the existing canon. Nonetheless, some people were unhappy. It seems that Bethesda either anticipated this reaction, or made a late addition to the game in response to it; an Easter egg which appears to poke fun at the whole situation.
The Latest Fallout 76 Easter Egg; Kent Connolly and the Mistress of Mystery
In Fallout 76, a certain message can be found on a terminal in the Riverside Manor. The Manor is actually the base for the Order of Mysteries faction. However, this Easter egg isn’t directly related to that group. On the terminal, you’ll find a long-winded message from one “Kent Connolly”; a fan of the Mistress of Mystery comic series who is complaining about continuity changes to the series’ lore.
“This episode [The Thieves of Thebes] seems to suggest that the Mistress may not have possessed the Eye during her second expedition to Egypt to vanquish the Cult of the Unseen Seer,” reads Connolly’s message; “As I’m sure you know, in Mistress of Mystery #141, a flashback shows the Mistress wearing the Eye at a museum gala that must have occurred between the first and second expeditions. The fan consensus is that she obtained the Eye during the first expedition, although I personally think it was among the relics she inherited from her father the archaeologist… As a longtime fan of your work, I know how important maintaining the history and continuity of the Mistress’ canon is to you, and I hope you will speak with the writers about being more careful with this in the future.”
Amusingly, Kent Connolly is a name that some fans may actually recognise. He appears as a character in Fallout 4; a ghoul who is fanatical about the Silver Shroud. The fact that hundreds of years separate the two games might be another joke about canon from Bethesda. However, it’s also quite possible that Connolly has simply lived that long. He is a ghoul, after all.
