FIFA 21 VOLTA Mode to Feature Online Play, Co-Op, New Locations, and Featured Battles

When the FIFA 21 VOLTA mode arrives with the new EA game it will bring some unique changes with it. One of the biggest will be a new online play aspect involving team up with friends. In addition, there will be a number of new locations available to play VOLTA at, and a featured squad battles component.

FIFA 21 VOLTA Mode Online Co-Op

In FIFA 20, fans were introduced to the new VOLTA mode, something EA said was heavily requested. It allowed for playing street football on various outdoor playgrounds. Gamers used a created avatar and could team up with and compete against professionals on street courts around the wall. They included your typical courts in parks, and not as typical courts up on the top of tall buildings.

Here’s a look at the original FIFA 20 reveal trailer for the mode:

The VOLTA Squads will be the new co-op online aspect of the mode. With this, gamers can team up with three friends or team up with other VOLTA players in the community for a 5v5 online game.

Gamers will also be able to customize their male or female avatars with various items including street football or pro football gear.

The online co-operative play wasn’t a part of FIFA 20 VOLTA mode, so this is going to be a welcome addition to the game. It appears that EA is taking a similar step with their upcoming Madden 21 The Yard mode, to get more players involved in co-op games.

New Featured Battles available

Along with co-op online play, a new Featured Battles aspect of FIFA 21 VOLTA mode will be included. This seems similar to the Squad Battles in FIFA Ultimate Team, although on a different scale and ruleset.

Per EA FIFA’s website, the Featured Battles will have players:

Match up against AI-controlled star players as well as squads from the VOLTA FOOTBALL community and compete for points and rewards.

Also mentioned is being able to recruit “the biggest names from the world of football and beyond.” The “beyond” part of that line opens up the possibility to see celebrities or other sports stars show up. Rapper Snoop Dogg has arrived in EA’s Madden and NHL games already. EA’s Ultimate Team regularly had a Featured Squad, consisting of a top-tier team handpicked by a pro footballer or other celeb.

Gamers will compete against AI-controlled squads or community players’ squads in the Featured Battles. It isn’t specified if gamers will be able to team up with friends or community members for this, but it seems possible. There is talk that FIFA Ultimate Team will include options to team up with others to complete Objectives.

What are the VOLTA locations?

According to Dexerto’s report, the FIFA 21 VOLTA mode features five brand new locations. Only three have been announced so far, though. They are Sao Paulo’s Downtown, a Milan street pitch, and a high-tech Dubai geodesic dome. Two more new locations are still to be announced for the mode.

Here’s a complete list of the VOLTA locations so far:

  • Tokyo
  • Parking Lot
  • Amsterdam Underpass
  • London
  • Lagos
  • Paris
  • Mexico City
  • Venice Beach
  • Cape Town
  • Warehouse
  • Rio De Janeiro
  • New York
  • Buenos Aires
  • Rome
  • Miami
  • Berlin
  • Barcelona
  • Sao Paulo*
  • Milan*
  • Dubai*
  • & two more unannounced locations

So far, it appears that EA’s FIFA 21 VOLTA mode could give the fans an interactive way to engage with friends and the community on the game. That’s what makes sports games that much more fun, as seen through NBA 2K and Live or MLB The Show.

More details are expected for the FIFA 21 VOLTA mode and other new features in August, as EA will present deeper dives into just about everything.

FIFA 21 arrives on October 9, 2020, for Sony PS4, Microsoft Xbox One, PC Origin (purchase it at the lowest price on the market here), and Steam. Three days early access will be available for those who pre-order select editions.
