Gearbox Reveals New Borderlands 3 Planet: Athenas

Following on from the reveal of Promethea three weeks ago, Gearbox has offered fans a very brief glimpse at another new Borderlands 3 planet; Athenas. Together with a short video shared on social media, the studio also released some details on their website. Athenas is the second of the four worlds to be revealed in this way, although one of the remaining planets is actually Pandora. (With which fans should be very familiar.)

The Borderlands 3 Planets: Athenas

“A misty, tranquil planet that has recently attracted the wrong kind of attention.” reads the brief description given of the new Borderlands 3 planet on the game’s website; “Athenas is mostly uninhabited, save for a sect of monks known as the Order of the Impending Storm who have made their home in the high peaks of the mountains. What secrets do they guard here, inside their ancient walls that were built long before humans set foot on Athenas?”

According to Gearbox, Athenas is mostly uninhabited, so it’s unclear how much the planet will feature in the game. One might think that Promethea, which is much more inhabited, might play a larger role. However, perhaps Gearbox will surprise fans in this case. The planet apparently features at least three areas of interest; “The Anchorhold, Dido’s Remorse, and Stormhaven Square”. Gearbox doesn’t include any actual details about these sites, however.

Borderlands 3 Planet Athenas Revealed 2

The brief gameplay video suggests that Maliwan may play a significant role in Borderlands 3 as an enemy faction. After all, the Maliwan corporation were also the faction threatening Promethea. Perhaps Athenas plays a role in the corporation’s larger plans? Indeed, perhaps players will find their way from Promethea to Athenas in order to stop them? For now, fans can do naught but guess, as Gearbox has released almost nothing when it comes to Maliwan. The gameplay video does give fans a glimpse at some Maliwan enemies, however, different to those which have been shown off before.
