Remember when more than half a year ago, we posted a video from the Tokyo Inter BEE conference which seemed to show off PS5 graphics on what looked like Gran Turismo? Well, now we have an update on that, and it is an exciting one. It turns out that Gran Turismo on PS5 is already under development. So perhaps the footage that we saw during that conference was not coincidental. Either way, we now have something solid to report.
What Kazunori Yamauchi Said About Gran Turismo on PS5
Creator Kazunori Yamauchi has confirmed that Polyphony Digital is working on Gran Turismo for PS5. This emerged while Yamauchi was commenting on GT Sport over at gtplanet. As he explained, “I think in terms of races themselves and physics GT Sport has really reached the best place that we’ve ever reached – we’re at a very good place. On the other hand, obviously we’re working on the next Gran Turismo already, and the world of sport we’ve achieved through GT Sport is something I’ve always imagined to be the future of Gran Turismo. We were able to establish that now.”
We also know that Yamauchi likes the idea of getting into VR with Gran Turismo. As he stated, “I really like VR; I’m one to believe in the possibilities of it, and it’s very suited for a driving game.” He also added, “We’ll make sure to follow that,” referring to what next gen consoles could bring as far as fresh potential for VR and racing games.
So will the next title be Gran Turismo 7, or will it be GT Sport 2? We don’t know at this point. But we do know that whatever the game ends up being titled, it is already being developed. Normally, it is a several-year process to flesh out one of these games. So while we may find out more about the game soon if Yamauchi chooses to keep sharing, an official reveal likely is not in our near future.
