Illithids and Githyanki Clash in the Baldur’s Gate 3 Opening Cinematic

Larian Studios certainly didn’t fail to deliver when they promised fans a Baldur’s Gate 3 reveal at PAX East. Not only did the studio show off gameplay for the first time, but they also unveiled the dramatic Baldur’s Gate 3 opening cinematic. The five-minute cinematic gives fans a better look at the horrifying illithids, their tentacular flying ships, and their bitter feud with the dragon-riding githyanki…

The Baldur’s Gate 3 Opening Cinematic

As of yet, Larian Studios hasn’t announced a release date for Baldur’s Gate 3. However, they have confirmed that the game will be releasing in Early Access sometime later this year. The opening cinematic was shown off as part of their PAX East Gameplay Reveal, which was the first time that the studio had shown off gameplay from the upcoming RPG. Fans got to see around 20 minutes of gameplay, including a glimpse at character creation and the first playable areas. The opening tutorial, which links together the end of the cinematic and the start of the game, did not appear. (Apparently, it isn’t yet ready to be shown publicly.)

When it releases, Baldur’s Gate 3 will be the first new game to launch in the franchise for twenty years. Larian Studios, the developers behind the critically-acclaimed Divinity: Original Sin RPG series, certainly seem to be a perfect choice to continue the classic series. Indeed, fans should be able to see their influence clearly in the design of the game thus far. Just like in Divinity: Original Sin 2, for instance, players have two choices when it comes to character creation. The first option is to simply make your own character, as normal for an RPG. Alternatively, you’ll be able to play as one of several pre-made characters, each of whom has their own story role.

Of course, details for that story are still few and far between. However, it certainly seems as though the illithids (also known as ‘mind flayers’) will be the primary antagonists. Indeed, getting an illithid tadpole out of the player character’s brain before it turns them into a mind flayer seems to be the driving goal at the start of the game. Following PAX East, it may be some time before Larian Studios shows off anything more. However, fans should certainly expect the game to appear at E3.
