The Mysterious Jackalope: A Lucrative Easter Egg in Far Cry 5

As expected for a game of its size, Far Cry 5 contains a wealth of easter eggs. However, for gamers looking to make some actual wealth, there are few as valuable as Far Cry 5’s Jackalope. Elusive and extremely rare, you can sell the skins of these bizarre animals for a significant profit.

The Jackalope: A Mythical Taxidermy

A fictional animal with roots in American folklore, jackalopes are usually depicted as jackrabbits with the antlers of a deer or the horns of a pronghorn. The original fake was a taxidermy displayed in a hotel in Douglas, Wyoming. The fake was created in 1930 by two hunters; Douglas Herrick and his brother. The pair grafted deer antlers onto the carcass of a jackrabbit. They also made copies, which they sold to a retailer in South Dakota.

Today, the mythical jackalope has become a tourist staple throughout the US. Similar fakes have been created throughout history in central Europe; the ‘Skvader’ in Sweden, the ‘Wolpertinger’ in Bavaria, and several more. Many are rather more outlandish than the Jackalope. The Bavarian ‘Wolpertinger,’ for example, appears to be a squirrel with a rabbit’s head, deer’s antlers, large fangs, and the wings of a pheasant.

Far Cry 5’s Jackalopes

The jackalopes in Far Cry 5 appear under a different name; “Alpha Hares.” While there are a number of “Alpha” varieties of animals in the game, the Alpha Hare is the only one with mythical origins. It’s currently unknown whether any other mythical animals appear in the game, but there are theories that Bigfoot may be hidden somewhere. For most players, their first encounter with a jackalope will be in the Bliss. In the Henbane River region, when Faith Seed pulls you into a vision, you will awake next to a jackalope which is running wild in Faith’s hallucinatory dream-scape.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that the animal is a product of delusion, however. Jackalopes can be found and hunted in Hope County. Unfortunately, they are extremely difficult to find. There is only one hunting spot for hares in the entire game. This spot can be found just northwest of Moonflower Trailer Park in the Henbane River. Once there, there is a very slim chance that you will come across an Alpha Hare, but the rewards for hunting one are noteworthy. You can already make a sizable profit selling Hare skins for $300 each, but you can sell an Alpha Hare Skin for $350.

Hares will sometimes spawn elsewhere in the world. Some players have also reportedly spotted jackalopes in other locations. As a result, players hoping to profit from this elusive easter egg should keep their eyes peeled.
