The 2020 NFL season is set to kick off Thursday night as the Houston Texans take on the Kansas City Chiefs. In conjunction with that news, EA Sports will make the Madden 21 game free to play. The promotion will not only celebrate the return of pro football, but also the return of former QB Colin Kaepernick to the virtual gridiron.

EA announces Free to Play Madden 21 game this weekend

On Wednesday (Sep. 9), EA posted a new “SZN 1 Hi-Def” trailer video to social media along with details for the upcoming “Free to Play” weekend for the Madden 21 game. It will officially start on Thursday (Sep. 10) and run through this coming Sunday (Sep. 13). During that time period, the game will be completely free to play.

That will allow gamers to test out a number of exciting modes including the brand new Madden The Yard mode involving six-on-six ironman football games. In addition, there’s the quick style of Superstar KO, along with the Play Now where gamers can try out new NFL rosters with the latest rookies.

The promotion celebrates NFL return, virtual Kaepernick

EA announced in the early details that they are making the game free to play as a way to celebrate not only the NFL’s return but also Colin Kaepernick’s return.

As of Wednesday, it was revealed that the former 49ers quarterback was available as a free agent in Madden 21. EA indicated they want to give everyone a chance to try out Kaepernick along with his special signature celebration, as well as other modes.

In Madden 21, Colin Kaepernick can basically be signed to any of the NFL teams for gamers to use. Upon scoring a touchdown, Kaepernick has a signature celebration with a raised fist for a symbol of Black Power. Kaepernick often used this symbolic gesture during his final season playing in the NFL.

The return of the NFL is also an exciting time for many fans of the Madden 21 game. The fate of the league even starting as planned was up in the air during the pandemic. Just one game is on the slate for Thursday to kick things off. However, it features former Madden cover star Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl champions in action.

There are 13 games on Sunday. That includes the debut of Tom Brady for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints. Monday night will bring two more matchups to ESPN. Fans certainly have plenty to be excited for, and with Madden, they can further enjoy their favorite players or teams.
