Microsoft Wants to Release a First Party Xbox Game Every Three Months

Been wishing that Microsoft would be faster at putting out first party games? It turns out that there may soon be a new first party Xbox game released every three months. This news comes straight from the top, right from Matt Booty, who is in charge of the Xbox Game studios. So you know that it is legitimately exciting.

A New First Party Xbox Game Could Arrive Every Three Months

Booty was talking with Ryan McCaffrey at IGN. McCaffrey wanted to know how often first party Xbox games would be coming out in the future. Booty replied quite directly on the matter. IGN quotes Booty as saying, “We’d love to be feeding a high quality game into game pass about every three months.”

So that is exciting news, right? And it also explains why Microsoft has been buying up game studios left and right. They pretty much have to, if they want to stick with such an ambitious schedule. Booty is a realistic on that score, at least to a point. If you check out the IGN article, he goes in-depth into some of the math involved with the scheduling. He does recognize that a game every third month is something to shoot for, not something which Microsoft can guarantee. Right now, the company owns a total of 14 game development studios.

We should be getting a new first party Xbox game every three months.

But how much pressure will this schedule put on developers? Hopefully, the goal to crank out first party games for Xbox so fast will not result in excessive crunch time for these studios. It would certainly be easy to imagine. Developers being forced to work 100 hour work weeks has become more and more of a problem in the gaming industry (or at least a more visible problem). So it would be nice to hear Booty or someone else at Microsoft comment on this matter.

Regardless, it is certainly exciting for Xbox gamers to have a swift first party game release schedule to potentially look forward to in the years ahead.
