We knew before Microsoft’s E3 conference even kicked off that there was a chance that there would be up to three Gears of War games announced—and we haven’t been disappointed! Today Microsoft dropped a trailer for Gears of War 5, and announced two brand new spin-off games under development.
The trailer follows Kait Diaz and Marcus Fenix from Gears of War 4. In the trailer, Kait recounts her recent nightmares to Marcus. Both then embark to discovery the meaning of her premonitions. Overall, the trailer’s feel is cinematic, but still fairly well in line with what we’ve seen in past titles in the series.
Does this mean that like its predecessor, Gears of War 5 will be less than innovative? Hopefully not—it would be nice to see the series take a different direction or evolve in some way. That being said, if it is pretty much more of what we’re used to … well, there are much worse things.
The two spin-off projects are still pretty mysterious. We know that one of them is a mobile game called Gears Pop! The Pop! game features (of all things) Pop! figurines. To say that this is unexpected given the nature of the franchise is a bit of an understatement. The other spin-off is a strategy game called Gears Tactics.
