Millennials and Generation Z Have Different Console Preferences

Which console brand do young people prefer: PlayStation or Xbox? It turns out that the answer to that question depends on the specific age group you are looking at. In fact, Millennials and Generation Z disagree with one another when it comes to console brands. Let’s take a look at the data.

Millennials and Generation Z Disagree About PlayStation vs. Xbox

MBLM just released a new study which analyzes brand preferences among various age groups, income brackets, and genders. It is an interesting study, and on the website, you can filter the results according to the demographics you are interested in. Doing so reveals divergent trends in console brand preferences between members of the Millennial generation and Generation Z.

So, it turns out that PlayStation is the preferred brand among members of the Millennial generation, while members of Generation Z lean toward Xbox instead.

When you think about it, this probably reflects the business decisions made by Sony and Microsoft during the current generation. Microsoft has been far more supportive of cross-play, backwards compatibility and streaming features than Sony has. That likely has built up more brand loyalty among the younger crowd where Xbox is concerned. Meanwhile, Sony still has its loyal Millennial gamer base. But the company will need to make some changes to its approach if it wants to continue to appeal to Millennials and pick up more Generation Z players.

Given this data, it should be pretty easy to make some predictions about the future for both companies based on the features of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X. But we are still waiting to learn more about both future generation consoles. Nevertheless, it should not be long before we find out a great deal more being as the holiday 2020 release window is coming up fast. Check our PlayStation news section again for more updates soon.
