MLB The Show 19 Players: 10 Rays Debut, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Possible, Aaron Judge’s Royalties

Welcome to the show! That expression has been used for decades honoring rookies breaking into the big leagues. Now that phrase is being used for the new MLB The Show 19 players making their video game debut.

Rookie MLB The Show 19 Players flattered

Video games have come a long way since Atari in the 1980s. With such realistic graphics, you have to do a double-take, the rookie class of MLB The Show 19 players are excited to be on board.

As reported by ESPN, ten new Tampa Bay Rays players have been revealed for the 2019 release, including Ryan Yarbrough and Ryne Stanek. Both grew up playing MLB The Show and admit they can’t wait to see themselves in the game.

Baltimore’s David Hess was so excited about being on The Show, he captured a lot of it on his phone!

Yarbrough was a big fan of fellow south-paws Scott Kazmir and Mark Buehrle and recalled how one day he wanted to pitch like them. Now he has his chance for the Rays and for The Show!

“It’s kind of scary how close some guys look to their real selves,” Yarbrough said. “Last year, I remember a couple guys joking that it was like looking in a mirror. And other guys were like, ‘Do they not like me or something? What happened?’ So, it’s fun to see how it comes out.”

MLB The Show rules

While it is supposed to be all about fun, MLB The Show does have its rules. Licensing manager Aaron Sokel represents the MLB Players Association. Sokel mentioned that MLB has some rules they have to live by to make this game successful.

One is that a player can’t be included in MLB The Show until he appears in the majors. Nevertheless, MLB The Show will have photoshoots of some of the hot rookies expected to get called up, like Vladimir Guerrero, Jr.

The game also cycles through veteran players every four or five years to keep up with current looks. One current example is pitcher James Paxton. Paxton had to shave his beard following his trade to the Yankees, so he’ll get a new image for the game.

The MLBPA operates the licensing for MLB The Show, which means they are in on the royalties. In 2018 MLB The Show sold over a million copies. Royalties from The Show are pooled with other MLB royalties – like jersey sales – and distributed equally among all active major leaguers.

So if you are Aaron Judge you kinda get the short end of the stick in a way. Judge, who had the highest-selling jersey in 2018, doesn’t receive a bigger check than any other player for having that honor. Either way, these guys aren’t hurting for cash!

One thing is for sure. It is a great time to be a Major League baseball player – and to be on MLB The Show 19!
