Oninaki Announced by Square Enix for PC, PS4, and Switch

The last few years have seen a resurgence in the popularity of JRPGs. In fact, games like Octopath Traveller have brought some interest back into the genre worldwide. Knowing this, Square Enix announced a new game called Oninaki. This new JRPG venture is made by the development team responsible for making I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear.

Oninaki Announced for PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4.

Oninaki will come to consoles and PC during Summer 2019

Despite the fact that Oninaki will be a multiplatform game; Square Enix announced it during February’s Nintendo Direct. Of course, this also means that the game will be available for PC, PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch. The release date for the game was revealed to be Summer of 2019. However, we’ll tell you the full release date once it’s made available!

This game will take place in a world where life can transcend death and vice versa. Oninaki tells the story of one Watcher on a journey to protect Life, after Death. Basically, Watchers are the people in charge of allowing the cycle of life to continue. Furthermore, they help wandering souls to find the right way towards eternal peace.

You can find more about the game’s story in the announcement trailer below:

The development of the game will be handled by Tokyo RPG Factory. For those who don’t know, this Square Enix subsidiary has developed games like I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear. Both games use an Active Time Battle (ATB) system that’s reminiscent of Chrono Trigger. However, Oninaki seems to actually be a bit more action-oriented.
