CD Projekt Red Launches New “Pawn Takes King” Arena Mode for Gwent

CD Projekt Red has launched the latest Special Arena Mode for Gwent: The Witcher card game. Following on from the “Law of the Jungle” Special Arena Mode, this new Gwent Special Arena Mode is entitled; “Pawn Takes King”. While Law of the Jungle was themed around Monster decks, this event is themed around the game’s lowest-power cards.

The New “Pawn Takes King” Gwent Special Arena Mode

Pawn Takes King is the first Gwent Special Arena Mode since Law of the Jungle ended last week. Law of the Jungle was themed around Monsters because Monsters defeated the Scoia’tael in the game’s latest Faction Challenge. This time, the event isn’t themed as a result of any other event. The mode is available now, and is scheduled to run until the 21st of August, when it will end at 12 PM CEST. In the Pawn Takes King Special Arena Mode, players can only use Bronze cards to build their decks; forcing players to rely solely on the weakest cards.

Geralt of Rivia Was Killed by a Peasant With a Pitchfork

“Until Tuesday, August 12th,” stated CD Projekt Red in an update announcing the new mode; “12 PM (noon) CEST, you will be able to build your deck with Bronze cards only. Good luck! And remember – even a witcher’s ploughed when fighting a crowd…”

The event description references the time when Geralt of Rivia was killed. The event is referenced in the first Witcher game, and occurs during Andrzej Sapkowski’s original Witcher novels. When a non-human pogrom took place in the city of Rivia, Geralt attempted to intervene to stop a rampaging mob and was killed by a peasant armed with a pitchfork. Yennefer was also killed by the mob as she attempted to heal him. The event took place shortly before the time at which CD Projekt Red’s games take place. The circumstances by which Geralt and Yennefer returned to life are unclear, but are implied to have been the work of Ciri.
