Rumor: The PlayStation 5 Will Feature Full Backwards Compatibility

We have heard so many contradicting reports concerning PS5 backwards compatibility. You might remember when Sony filed a backwards compatibility patent which got up our hopes for full backwards compatibility. But there was a prominent report later in the year which implied very strongly that there would be no backwards compatibility past PS4. But just last month, we started hearing rumors that full backwards compatibility might happen again. And now, we have yet another new rumor suggesting full backward compatibility.

The PS5 Could Have Full Backwards Compatibility After All

This rumor comes from HipHopGamer, who posted the following tweet:

The text reads, “PLAYSTATION 5: Remastering Engine For PS1 – PS4 Titles. Backwards Compatibility Enhanced.”

If there is truth to the rumor, the “remastering engine” for the PS5 would allow it to play titles not just from the PS4 generation, but also from PS3, PS2 and even PS1. Further, this feature won’t just let you play your old games on your new console, but might actually enhance the experience with 4K support and other cool improvements.

So, how likely is this rumor to be true? Well, HipHopGamer has a good record when it comes to accuracy, so it is possible that he is correct about all this. Plus, backwards compatibility is a big deal for the upcoming generation, and Sony should be bearing that in mind.

At the same time, it is hard to shake that one prominent report last year which made it sound so sure that there would be no full backwards compatibility for the PS5. Either way, all we can do in the meantime is wait for more PlayStation news. We will let you know just as soon as there is any solid news concerning backwards compatibility on PS5.
