Prey’s New Rogue Moon Update Adds Several New Cosmetic Skins to the Mooncrash DLC

Arkane Studios has released a minor update for Prey called Rogue Moon which, as its name hints at, specifically focuses on the game’s Mooncrash DLC side-adventure.

Prey's Rogue Moon update comes with new roguelite Operator skins.

The Rogue Moon update (which brings Prey: Mooncrash up to version 1.10) itself isn’t very substantial, but the meaning behind the new content it comes with is. Those who download the free update will be granted access to six new cosmetic skins which they can use to gussy up their Mooncrash Operator companion. If you also happen to be a fan of the sort of roguelike games that clearly inspired Mooncrash, then some of the skins will no-doubt look a little…familiar.

The six new Operator skins are each themed around a different indie roguelike game, and the games that are featured include the following:

  • Spelunky
  • Rogue Legacy
  • Darkest Dungeon
  • Risk of Rain
  • Dead Cells
  • Don’t Starve

In a new blog post on Bethesda’s website (Bethesda being the publisher behind Prey), members of the Prey development team talked about how much they loved the six games featured in Rogue Moon’s new series of Operator skins, and how each of those games helped in influencing the Mooncrash DLC as a whole. Apparently, Mooncrash’s ‘Corruption Meter’ mechanic was inspired by Spelunky’s Ghost system and Risk of Rain’s threat meter, while the DLC’s persistent progression elements were a clear homage to Rogue Legacy’s family legacy meta-progression.

Rogue Moon follows the previously released Blue Moon update which introduced minor bug fixes and had its own series of new Mooncrash cosmetic items (including Operator skins for Bethesda properties such as Wolfenstein and The Elder Scrolls Online). Meanwhile, Arkane Studios co-founder Raphael Colantonio also recently sat down with Kotaku to discuss Prey’s polarizing endgame.

Prey fans still have more to look forward to beyond these minor Mooncrash updates as Arkane also plans on adding in a unique competitive multiplayer experience later this year. In the upcoming competitive mode, one player controlling a human avatar must sniff out several other players who are playing as the game’s Mimics and can thus disguise themselves as ordinary objects.
