PS5 and Xbox Series X Could Face Production Delays

Over the past few months, we’ve heard a lot of contradictory claims about what we can expect regarding release dates and prices for next gen consoles. Could PS5 and Xbox Series X face production delays?

The short answer to this question is ‘Yes.” Anything seems possible these days. But let’s take a look at recent rumors as well as the latest updates to see if we can get a feel for whether we will be able to buy the next gen consoles on time.

Could PS5 and Xbox Series X Could Face Production Delays?

We reported a few weeks ago that market research and consulting firm DFC Intelligence said, “Coronavirus is likely to have a major short-term impact on the delivery of both systems. There is a strong likelihood one or both systems will not make a 2020 launch. If the systems do launch, supply will likely be constrained and initial pricing could be higher than expected. Currently, the economy is in an unprecedented state of uncertainty. Even if the situation clears up in a few weeks, the ability to manufacture and release a high-end new game system has already been severely impacted.”

DFC Intelligence also says, “Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will release to record consumer demand. The challenge Sony and Microsoft face is making sure they release systems that meet expectations. Given the current situation, waiting to make sure they get the initial product right is the most prudent choice.”

Despite this fact, Bloomberg said, “A Sony spokeswoman said it doesn’t see any notable impact on the launch of its next-generation game console PlayStation 5 planned at the end of this year.”

What is the Latest?

In a more recent report, Bloomberg stated, “Sony Corp. plans to produce far fewer units of its upcoming PlayStation 5 in its first year than it had for the previous-generation console’s launch, according to people familiar with the matter.”

The article did not provide any updates or predictions relevant to Xbox Series X. As of this point in time, Microsoft still seems to be shooting for the same November 2020 release window.

What this means is that if you pre-order, you might be able to get your hands on either of these two next-gen consoles this holiday season. But if you do not, and supplies run out, you might have to wait before you can order a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X.

But what will low supply and high demand do to pricing? Previously, we heard predictions that the price for both consoles could range as high as $600. But Bloomberg states in the previously linked report, “Some analysts believe the close contest for attention between the PlayStation and Xbox, especially in the U.S., may force both companies to sell their new consoles at a loss.” The article even quotes Damian Thong, an analyst at Macquarie Capital, as saying that the price could end up as low as $450 for both.

Of course, that is not a guarantee that that will happen. And how logical is it when demand is likely to far outpace supply for PS5 and Xbox Series X? If the console you want ends up being more expensive than you predicted, you could come up short. Should that happen, even if there are consoles available to purchase, you might find yourself delayed by your own lack of funds. It could take you weeks or months longer than you expected to save up sufficient money.

It is also important to remember that this situation is constantly evolving. We have heard many predictions of normalcy over the past months which have not come true. It may be wise to err on the side of caution with your expectations. Save up extra money, pre-order if you can, and be prepared either way for a possible delay in receiving your console.
