Red Dead Redemption 2 Companion App Hints At Eventual PC Port

As of this writing, Red Dead Redemption 2 is only available on consoles. However, it’s no secret that many fans are hoping Rockstar will eventually port the game over to the PC platform. No definitive plans for a PC port have been announced, yet hints have now emerged from an unlikely source. Code buried in Red Dead Redemption 2’s companion app points to both PC and even VR integration.

Red Dead Redemption PC Code Findings – Will Red Dead Redemption 2 Release on PC?

The companion app findings come via Rockstar Intel (courtesy of Polygon). Specifically, strings of code found in the app make reference to PC-specific parameters and settings. One code string even mentions Oculus, suggesting that Rockstar plans to implement some sort of virtual reality component.

At the very least, it looks like the companion app is coming to PC alongside its mobile counterparts. However, some of the code lines point directly to parameters for a functioning PC game, not just an app. It’s too early to say with any certainty, but it seems Rockstar is at least considering an eventual PC port. Said PC port might even have VR capabilities if the companion app findings prove to be entirely accurate.

Rockstar’s last major release, Grand Theft Auto V, had a similar release structure. The game was originally a console exclusive before eventually coming to PC as well. Given how much GTA V continues to thrive on PC, a Red Dead Redemption 2 port isn’t entirely unlikely. Indeed, Rockstar would be foolish not to capitalize on the clear demand for a PC version. Porting a game as massive as Red Dead Redemption 2 over to PC architecture, though, would be time-consuming. That’s assuming, of course, that Rockstar hasn’t already begun such a process.

In the meantime, Rockstar is likely prepping for next month’s launch of Red Dead Online. The game’s online component will launch first as a public beta on consoles ahead of its full official release. As of this writing an exact launch date for Red Dead Online’s beta hasn’t yet been announced.
