“Will there be a delay in the launch of PlayStation 5 because of coronavirus?” That is the big question on everybody’s minds. Despite the fact that we have heard a lot of conflicting rumors and statements, it seems like we have reason to be optimistic that the PS5 launch during COVID-19 will happen on time. Why? Because that is what Sony suggests in a recent statement.
PS5 Launch During COVID-19 Might Not Be Delayed
Let’s review. Back in February, we hard that the production of PS5 was reportedly on track even with the virus. But later that month, we heard rumors that COVID-19 could impact production of next generation consoles. And most recently, market research firm DFC Intelligence predicted that COVID-19 would delay the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Now, we have an update, and it comes from Sony itself. According to Bloomberg, “A Sony spokeswoman said it doesn’t see any notable impact on the launch of its next-generation game console PlayStation 5 planned at the end of this year.”
That isn’t exactly a confirmation that there will be no launch delay. But surely a delay would be a “notable impact,” right? Supplies issues also would fall under the category of “notable impact.” So this also seems to suggest that Sony will not have a problem meeting market demand. If so, maybe that means that we won’t see an artificial inflation in the price of the console because of the virus. That would sure be good news.
The coronavirus situation continues to evolve every day. While in some respects, China is on a path toward recovery, economically, many of the ripples are just beginning to spread. Being as that is the case, we still don’t know for sure what the future brings. But let’s just hope that Sony’s optimism is on target, and the PS5 launch during COVID-19 proceeds as planned.
