The Last of Us 2: Everything We Know About The Game So Far

Of all the game companies that showed up during this year’s E3, Sony was the one notable exception. Sadly, that meant we didn’t get any new information on Sony’s upcoming first-party titles, including The Last of Us 2. Still, that doesn’t mean there haven’t been any developments regarding Naughty Dog’s highly anticipated sequel. We went ahead and rounded up all the pertinent Last of Use 2 information in case you need a refresher.

The Last of Use 2 known details

Despite its initial 2016 unveiling, we still know shockingly little about The Last of Us 2. We do at least know it will be a direct sequel to the original 2013 game. Protagonists Ellie and Joel will both return, though they’ll be noticeable older. This is because the sequel is set five years after the first game, which means Ellie is now an adult. The main crux of the sequel’s story involves Ellie doing battle with a violent cult that threatens her home settlement.

We haven’t seen too much in the way of gameplay, but we know Ellie will have a large playable role. The Last of Us 2 will naturally continue the brutal themes of violence and survival that defined the first game. Game director Neil Druckmann has also said The Last of Us 2’s central theme will be “hate.” Since the first game had a juxtaposing theme of “love,” we’re guessing the sequel won’t be for the squeamish.

Aside from Ellie and Joel, The Last of Us 2 will include some new faces as well. The game’s second teaser trailer revealed new characters named Yara and Lev alongside a third as-yet-named character. It also looks like the main villain will be a woman named Emily with violent tendencies.

When Does It Launch?

Unfortunately, The Last of Us 2 doesn’t yet have a confirmed release date. Several sources suggest it will launch in February of 2020, but all of those sources are unverified. To his credit, Druckmann knows how badly fans want to find out when the release date is. He even joked on Twitter about how the sequel’s release is pushed back by five minutes for every request.
