Anthem Producer Says Mass Effect Andromeda Never Could Support Long-Term Plans for DLC Content

Anthem producer, Mike Gamble, has some fighting words for Mass Effect Andromeda, BioWare’s latest entry to the Mass Effect series. As readers may know, BioWare intends for Anthem to be a live-service game, meaning that not only will it be a whole different experience from past BioWare games but will also give players reason to come back to the game constantly to see new content that’s been added.

That approach is already a lot different to how Mass Effect Andromeda, as well as other Dragon Age and Mass Effect games, were handled. It was this approach that Gamble spoke about freely during Anthem’s panel at PAX West, of which you can view here.

“We don’t have to wait for full expansions anymore like our previous games. If you look at Dragon Age or Mass Effect you’d have to wait for three, four, five, six months sometimes between big updates.” Gamble continued, “we don’t have to abide by that anymore. We can actually, week-over-week, trickle out content.”

Of course, that calls into question what sort of content for Anthem there will be. Content coming out every week will most certainly have a higher possibility to call people back to BioWare’s newest game, but will it have the same meaning and effect as DLC for their previous games?

Well, according to Gamble, Mass Effect Andromeda never really had the foundation to stand on its own feet in the first place, and thus there was no support for it.

During the panel, he said, “I can speak conclusively when it comes to Andromeda, the plans were never in place the way that they are for Anthem.” He continued, “The systems and tools weren’t in place to support the long-term plans, it was never like Anthem. It never had a good, solid foundation to start from with that. Where with Anthem [post-launch] is a part of it. The job does not end on February 22. It only begins for us, really.”
