Call of Duty 2020 is Unlikely to Feature Battle Royale

Following the recent release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered, the next upcoming release of the franchise is likely to be the much-rumoured Call of Duty 2020 title. Although it has yet to be officially announced, online rumours and purported leaks have claimed that it will be a reboot of the Call of Duty: Black Ops series. Whatever the case, however, the game is very unlikely to have a battle royale mode.

Why Call of Duty 2020 Probably Won’t Have Battle Royale

The last month has been a busy one for the Call of Duty franchise. Not only did Activision release Call of Duty: Warzone, the long-awaited free-to-play battle royale mode for Modern Warfare, but they followed it up with the release of Modern Warfare 2 Remastered. While Modern Warfare and Warzone will continue to receive new content in the coming weeks and months, the next big release for Call of Duty fans to look forward to will be the next full game in the series; the as-yet untitled “Call of Duty 2020”.

Call of Duty 2020 Won't Have Battle Royale

According to certain leaks and rumours, this 2020 title will be a reboot of the Black Ops series. Of course, it’s impossible to verify whether this rumour is accurate. However, given the track record of Call of Duty leaks over the last few months, it’s certainly believable. Whatever the case, the game will almost certainly avoid battle royale, focusing instead on smaller-form multiplayer.

The reason for this is that Activision seems to be adopting a new content delivery format for Call of Duty, starting with Warzone. At present, rumours about a Call of Duty game coming in 2021 suggest that it will be free-to-play; possibly something similar to Warzone, with battle royale and even some Fortnite-esque mechanics. When Call of Duty 2020 launches, Warzone will only be a few months old, and still free-to-play. As such, a large proportion of its already-massive audience is likely to stick with it. As such, it would make more sense for Activision to continue supporting Warzone as a separate ecosystem; something which provides a different experience to the upcoming 2020 title, which may focus more on campaign and small-form multiplayer.
