CD Projekt Red’s Secret Triple-A Project is Cyberpunk Multiplayer

For some time now, it has been known that CD Projekt Red has been working on two projects; Cyberpunk 2077 and a second, secret game. All that they had previously confirmed about this project is that it is a triple-A RPG and it is due to release in 2021. Now, the studio has unexpectedly revealed that this project is in fact ‘Cyberpunk Multiplayer’; seemingly a standalone multiplayer release which will be somewhat separate from Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk Multiplayer: CD Projekt Red’s Secret Triple-A Game

Until now, CD Projekt Red have been relatively vague when discussing the possibility of Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer, despite evidence of work being done towards that possibility. At the same time, the studio has been almost completely silent about the identity of their second ongoing project, presumably to keep from taking attention away from Cyberpunk 2077. Now, it seems that the latter was in fact the reason for the former; with Cyberpunk Multiplayer firmly under wraps, studio representatives wouldn’t have wanted to flat-out deny that multiplayer was a possibility. However, they would also have been unable to promise that it would be part of Cyberpunk 2077. After all, it seems now that it will be its own release.

Cyberpunk Multiplayer Confirmed by CD Projekt Red

This reveal has come thanks to a recent investors call, in which CD Projekt representative MichaƂ Nowakowski spoke about the project. Asked whether the recent Cyberpunk 2077 release date delay would affect the studio’s second project, he states; “One thing we need to make clear is that the AAA release we’re working on in parallel with CP2077 is Cyberpunk Multiplayer […]”

Nowakowski went on to say that he didn’t foresee a delay to its 2021 release date as a result of the Cyberpunk 2077 delay. This reveal has come much sooner than expected; indeed, an E3 2020 reveal had seemed much more likely. However, it seems that the recent delay has changed CD Projekt’s concerns somewhat. Unfortunately, this does quash any hopes that the project was a new Witcher game of some sort. Although, it does simultaneously confirm that Cyberpunk multiplayer is definitely happening. It’s currently unclear how the game will be distinct from Cyberpunk 2077; will it be like GTA Online to GTA V, for instance, or a completely standalone release? Fans will have to wait for more concrete information from CD Projekt Red.
