Pete Hines Dismisses Comparisons Between Elder Scrolls: Legends and Hearthstone

The Elder Scrolls: Legends and Hearthstone have sometimes been compared by fans; along with Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, they are all card game spin-offs of larger franchises. The comparisons between Bethesda and Blizzard’s respective card games have, however, been dismissed by Bethesda VP Pete Hines.

Comparisons Between Elder Scrolls: Legends and Hearthstone

Pete Hines, Bethesda’s Vice President of Global Marketing, recently spoke with Stevivor during QuakeCon 2018. Asked if the comparisons between The Elder Scrolls: Legends and its direct competitor, Hearthstone, can be annoying, Hines responded in the affirmative. “We started working on [Legends] before we knew Hearthstone existed,” he stated; “So no, it wasn’t an answer to that because we were working on Legends before then.”

Bethesda Started Work on Legends Before They Knew Hearthstone Existed

“But we feel like we are just trying to hit a different part of the strategy card game spectrum then they are in.” continued Hines; “We’ve gotten a lot less of it now, I think people who have actually tried it have understood how different it is. At first glance, yes you’re playing cards onto a play space so sure, you could compare it to that. You could compare it to a lot of things. But I think it’s doing a number of things that are demonstrably different from Hearthstone that we feel good about what we’re doing and where we are going.”

Elder Scrolls: Legends was recently given over to a new studio; Sparkypants Studios. The new studio is taking over from Dire Wolf Digital, who originally developed the game. Sparkypants Studios have been working on a major overhaul of the free-to-play card game. That overhaul was unveiled for the first time earlier this year at E3. More recently, the studio requested patience from the game’s fans as they took over control of the card game. The game has not performed poorly thus far. However, Bethesda has made statements suggesting that the company feels that it has not lived up to its potential yet.
