Destiny 2: How to Earn the Thorn Exotic Hand Cannon

Destiny 2’s version of the Thorn Exotic hand cannon has finally arrived as part of the Season of the Drifter. In this guide, we’ll explain how you can claim Thorn’s devastating power for yourself.

Destiny 2 How to Unlock Thorn

Destiny 2 Thorn Guide

Before you can work towards unlocking Thorn, you have to first find its ruined shell and restore it. To find the ruined Thorn and kick off the quest, you must venture to a specific part of the EDZ. This fan-made GIF shows exactly where you need to go to find Thorn and trigger the restoration quest.

Collecting Materials

After you find the ruined Thorn and take it to Banshee-44, you’ll need to gather some restoration materials. Each materials group requires 50 individual units, and how you acquire those units varies slightly for each type.  We’ve outlined the materials and their acquisition methods below:

Hadronic Essence

  • Complete Asher Mir’s daily bounties on Io (awards five materials for each bounty)
  • Kill enemy Warlocks in the Crucible (three materials per kill)
  • Complete Nightfall strikes (15 materials per completion)

Plasteel Plating

  • Complete Sloan’s daily bounties on Titan (five materials for each bounty)
  • Kill enemy Titans in the Crucible (three materials per kill)
  • Complete Blind Well runs (five materials per completed run, 10 if you trigger the Heroic version)

Sapphire Wire

  • Complete Ana Bray’s daily bounties on Mars (awards five materials for each bounty)
  • Kill enemy Hunters in the Crucible (three materials per kill)
  • Complete Escalation Protocol waves (five materials per wave)

To The Crucible

The next step is a bit of a grind which involves slowly filling up a percentage gauge in the Crucible. Specifically, the only way to make progress is to kill enemy players either with hand cannons or Void abilities. You can naturally double up by using a Void-based hand cannon like Kindled Orchid or the IKELOS V.3. Bonus progress is also awarded for kills in the Competitive and Iron Banner playlists.

Silencing Savathun’s Song

With the PvP grind finished, you’ll be sent to Tyra Karn at the EDZ’s Farm social space. Karn will in turn send you to a special 660 power version of the Savathun’s Song strike on Titan. The strike is pretty tough due to its Iron and Blackout modifiers, and it doesn’t support matchmaking.

Also, during the final boss fight, a pair of unique Hive Knights will spawn. You have to kill both of the Knights before slaying the final boss or the strike will auto-fail. Finish the strike and Thorn will be yours.
