Fallout 76 Perk Cards Can’t Be Bought With Micro-Transactions

QuakeCon is currently ongoing in Texas, and while Doom Eternal is the focus of the event, more Fallout 76 details have also been emerging. Todd Howard led a panel on Fallout 76 Perk Cards yesterday, where he also spoke about PvP. Now, Pete Hines has made an important clarification about Perk Cards which should reassure fans.

How Players Get Fallout 76 Perk Cards

Yesterday, Todd Howard explained in detail how players will get Perk Card packs and use them in the game. Players can only have a set number of Cards equipped at a time. Each one gives them a new ability. Elsewhere at QuakeCon, Pete Hines, Bethesda’s Vice President of Global Marketing, was approached by VG247. Hines was asked a particularly important question; in many ways the Perk Card packs resemble loot boxes, which feature in many other online multiplayer games. It’s known that Fallout 76 will include micro-transactions, too. As a result, Hines was asked whether players will be able to purchase Perk Card packs via micro-transactions.

Fallout 76 Perk Cards Grant Players Abilities When Equipped

Hines’ answer was not surprising, given Bethesda’s wary approach to multiplayer thus far. Nevertheless, it should reassure plenty of fans who had doubts. “No,” he stated; “you get them when you level up, every two levels – two, four, six, eight, ten – then, after that, every five levels. You only get them as a reward for leveling up”. Thus, there will be no way for players to purchase extra cards, whether with in-game currency or real money. The statement reaffirms earlier comments made by Bethesda about the Fallout 76 micro-transactions; that they will be for getting cosmetic items only. It would be an extremely unpopular move if Bethesda made Perk Cards available for purchase. It would be a way for players to get a direct, in-game advantage by spending more money; something the vast majority of gamers are firmly against.
