FIFA 20 Gameplay Changes: Off the Ball Features, 1v1 Play Brings New Commands

With the arrival of FIFA 20 from EA Sports, the gameplay is said to have undergone an overhaul which will impact the way gamers strategize. In particular, one of the FIFA 20 gameplay changes will involve off the ball play on both offense and defense. Just recently, EA’s FIFA gave a bit more insight into some part of the gameplay updates for 1v1 aspects. Those will involve gamers having to master some of the new controller commands in order to handle 1v1 situations.

FIFA 20 Gameplay changes for Off the Ball

When EA first released their VOLTA Football trailer and discussed the improved FIFA gameplay at the EA event in California, they spoke of three main areas. One of those involves on-the-ball updates. Another is the FIFA 20 ball physics, and the third is off-the-ball gameplay changes.

With FIFA 20, EA says gamers are going to see a lot more 1v1 situations all over the pitch. They also mention that the dribbler and defender are going to have “more time and space” in which to react to the situations. That should make for some interesting strategies as gamers adjust to this update.

Another one of the big changes EA made was to overhaul how AI defenders will act in FIFA 20. According to their notes, gamers will find “better defensive support” from their AI-controlled teammates. This will come due to how they updated both the positioning and tackling systems.

FIFA rolled out a short video clip which was part of the larger gameplay trailer they released. It showcases the updated “Dynamic 1v1” situations for attack and defense.

Due to the changes, EA notes that the off-the-ball gameplay will be “slower and more composed.” However, on-the-ball will be “very responsive and agile.” That remains to be seen, but most gamers are hoping that’s better than FIFA 19.

Gamers should basically see more natural and realistic motion from players during their games. This will give gameplay that feel of being a real-life game even though it’s a video game simulation.

New off-the-ball controller commands

In their pitch notes, EA highlighted some of the new tools and commands to resolve 1v1 situations. Those include the new “Strafe Dribble,” “Controlled Tackling,” and “Agile Jockey System.” There are also a number of new commands to master on game controllers.

Here’s the new commands that will be available in FIFA 20:

  • Lofted Ground Pass: X+X / A + A
  • Lofted Ground Through Pass: △+△ / Y + Y
  • Driven Lobbed Through Pass: L1 +R1 + △ / LB + RB + Y
  • Slow Dribble: L2 + R2 + LS / LT + RT + LS
  • Set Up Touch: R1 + RS Direction (Hold) / RB + RS Direction (Hold)
  • Strafe Dribble: L1 +LS / LB + LS
  • Strafe Dribble (lock face angle): L1 + R1 + LS / LB + RB + LS
  • Goalkeeper Cross Intercept: △ / Y + △ / Y (Hold)

A lot of gamers will be practicing the above controller commands in order to become better in those 1v1 situations. That said, it’s going to be interesting to see if the gameplay has become smoother and well-received by the community, or if certain glitches will arise. The latter is possible, but thanks to EA developers’ constant updates, many gamers are hoping for an improved FIFA 20 gameplay.

The new FIFA 20 game officially arrives for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PCs on September 27, 2019.
