Online Hoaxer Sets Up Fake “Elder Scrolls VI: Hammerfell” Website

Bethesda revealed their first announcement trailer for The Elder Scrolls VI one week ago at the studio’s E3 presentation. Although the game is likely still years away from release, the flurry of renewed interest stoked by the trailer has been significant. It is also tempting, apparently, for hoaxers attempting to troll fans online; someone has already set up a fake website claiming that the game is entitled “The Elder Scrolls VI: Hammerfell”.

The Elder Scrolls VI: Hammerfell?

Whomever set up the website acquired the urlĀ www.theelderscrollsvihammerfell.com. The website features nothing but a title made from a screenshot taken from the trailer and an embedded fake trailer; three guesses what it links to. (It should come as no surprise to anybody familiar with internet trolling.) In actual fact, Bethesda has not announced the title of The Elder Scrolls VI, only that the game is in some early stage of development. In all likelihood, the game is still in the very early stages of pre-production, and a title may not have been decided upon yet. The studio has been very clear that they have two more games to release before the next Elder Scrolls. Fallout 76 will be the first, when it releases in November. Starfield will be the second.

The Elder Scrolls VI Won't Release Until After Starfield

The Starfield announcement trailer, also revealed at E3, was equally brief and vague. As a result, that game is likely still a year or two away from release at least. As such, fans may not see any significant announcements about The Elder Scrolls VI until 2020 at the earliest. To be fair to the hoaxer, Hammerfell is certainly a very likely location for the game’s setting. However, Bethesda has confirmed nothing about the setting. Even the landscape shown in the announcement trailer is fairly generic, and could even prove to be irrelevant to the game’s eventual setting if the development team change their plans in the next few years.
