The latest God of War includes several different dragons. While you will get the opportunity to fight at least one, three of the game’s ferocious wyrms actually need to be freed, rather than fought. Otr is one of these three, a dragon imprisoned in Veithurgard. Freeing Otr is quite a challenge, but well worth doing.
To complete The Imprisonment of Otr, you first need to head for Veithurgard, east of the Lake of Nine, past Veithurgard Pass. If you haven’t opened the gates to Veithurgard yet, instructions can be found in the Hammer Fall Favor guide. Once you arrive, go to the statue of Thor and turn southward until you come to a beach where you can see Otr imprisoned. As soon as you land, you’ll be attacked by Draugr and Tatzelwurms. Make your way across the beach and head up the steps that lead to Otr, watching out for his lightning breath. At the top of the steps is a shrine which will give you “The Imprisonment of Otr” Favor.
Destroying the First Two Shrines
To free Otr, you’ll need to destroy three shrines (not including the one that gives you the Favor). From that first shrine, turn right and climb up a ledge. A path above leads to the first destructible shrine. From there, head back toward Otr and then go in the opposite direction into a new area. Turn northward to find the second shrine. Again, watch out for Otr’s breath here. From the second shrine, head eastward towards a ruined bridge. You should be able to see a gate on the far side. To reach it, head north and down to an area filled with enemies and surrounded by pillars. A flight of steps leads from there to a small area lit by a torch. Up the steps, turn right and cross a ledge. At the gate, turn left and drop to a series of gaps which you can leap across, leading you to the far side of the bridge. Here, you can break a red pot and leave a clear path across the bridge. Now, you need to open the gate.
Opening the Gate
Before you do, pick up a Lore Marker on the left side of the area. One of Odin’s Ravens is also perched on the rubble. Turn around when facing the Lore Marker to spot it. To open the gate, you need to use Kratos’ axe to hit arrange four switches. Those on the left are already correct. The bottom right switch needs to be an upright “F”, which is very close to the switch. The top right switch is an “N” which is behind you, obscured by boxes. Inside, clear out the enemies and collect a More Than Myth entry. Up ahead is also an encounter where you can find one of the Horns of Veithurgard. Turn right and make your way through the ruins. Destroy a red pot to open a path to the third and final shrine.
Freeing Otr
Open the gate to the right and head back to the ruined bridge area. Near the entrance to the ruins is a large switch which you can turn to lower the water level. This allows you to access an area to the right where another Horn of Veithurgard and a Lore Marker can be found. Continue along that path and you’ll find yourself face-to-face with Daudi Hamarr, a Fire Troll boss. He should be similar to other troll bosses you will have faced before, though be careful of his stomp attacks which leave damaging rings of flame on the ground. Once Hamarr is defeated, claim the Horn of Heimdall and other loot, along with the Leviathan’s Wake runic attack from a nearby chest. Leave the arena by climbing a wall, which will take you up to Otr. When you free the dragon, you will receive the Brilliant Mark of the Dragon, an enchantment that lets you become unstoppable for three seconds, as well as a Dragon Tear.
