Is the Borderlands 3 Trailer Hinting at a Release Date?

Yesterday, Gearbox Software finally confirmed that Borderlands 3 is indeed in development with the release of its first trailer; an explosive showcase of gameplay and the chaos which awaits players when it eventually releases. However, the trailer did not specify the Borderlands 3 release date. Or did it?

Theory Suggests Borderlands 3 will Launch on the 1st of October

Although there was no obvious Borderlands 3 release date included in the new trailer, some fans on Reddit believe that they may have uncovered a hidden message. According to a Redditor who goes by Zottelpanda, the game will release on the 1st of October, 2019. Of course, this is purely theory; one which certainly hasn’t received any sort of official confirmation. As such, fans should definitely take it with a grain of salt.

Borderlands 3 Release Date Speculation

Zottelpanda points specifically to three moments in the trailer and the buildings which are visible in each one. At 1:39 in the Borderlands 3 trailer, a large building is visible. This building returns at 1:52, when it becomes possible to see that there are the numbers ’10’ on its side. Shortly before that, at 1:41, a different building is visible with the numbers ’01’ on the side. Of course, this could be pure coincidence, or the numbers could be totally meaningless. To be fair to Zottelpanda, however, the 1st of October is a realistic date based purely on other factors.

Gearbox’s first official trailer for Borderlands 3 focused heavily on gameplay, suggesting that the game is far along in development. In fact, choosing to release a gameplay trailer now practically guarantees a big appearance at E3 later this year. No doubt the studio is saving the release date reveal for that event. If the game is close to release, then releasing it in the subsequent (and popular) September – November release window would make perfect sense. Whether the numbers on the sides of the buildings actually correlate with a specific date is certainly up for debate, but until Gearbox makes an official announcement, this is certainly as good a theory as any.
