Monster Hunter: World Is the Best-Selling Game in Japan for 2018 so Far

There have been a ton of incredible games to release in 2018 so far, with Capcom’s Monster Hunter: World being one of them. According to sales numbers published by Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu, the PS4 version of Monster Hunter: World has taken the top spot as the best-selling game of 2018, as of June 24. Considering how popular the monster-hunting franchise has been in Japan, it’s no surprise that the folks over yonder have been eating up the new entry in the series. As you can see from the top five games in the list below, Monster Hunter sits at the top with Nintendo’s Splatoon 2 right behind it, even though it released in the summer of 2017 mind you:

01./00. [PS4] Monster Hunter: World # (Capcom) {2018.01.26} (¥8.980) – 1.949.592 / NEW
02./00. [NSW] Splatoon 2 # (Nintendo) {2017.07.21} (¥5.980) – 631.298 / 2.383.394

Monster Hunter has managed to sell almost two million units with – just this year alone – Splatoon 2 selling about 600K. Actually, looking at this once over, all of the top five games this year have been Nintendo Switch exclusives besides Monster Hunter of course. Capcom took the world by storm earlier this year with the multiplatform release of a core Monster Hunter title for the first time ever. Giving the series some quality of life improvements, streamlining tons of gameplay elements, and just making it more accessible for newcomers and veterans alike, surely helped push the sales of the action-RPG.

Monster Hunter: World is now available on PS4 and Xbox One, with a PC release coming very soon.
