There’s never been any question that PlayStation 4 has been among the most popular and successful video game consoles ever. But now the stats are in, and PS4 has sold 100 million units. Not only that, but it’s achieved a great feat in doing so more quickly than any other console in history.
Sony Set a Record With How Fast It Sold 100 Million Units of PlayStation 4 Consoles
Sony recently released its Q1 FY2019 Consolidated Financial Results. Along with this report, the company also released Supplemental Information for the Consolidated Financial Results for the First Quarter Ended June 30, 2019. The information revealed that between the months of April and June this year, Sony sold 3.2 million units of PlayStation 4 consoles. In doing so, it achieved the 100 million units sold milestone for its current gen console.
Those stats are already outstanding, but it gets better. According to analyst Daniel Ahmad, Sony sold 100 million units faster with PS4 than any other console has to date.
The tweet (along with his subsequent comment) reads, “Sony has shipped 100 million PlayStation 4’s as of June 30th 2019. A total of 3.2 million consoles were shipped during the April to June quarter. This makes PlayStation 4 the fastest home console to reach 100 million unit sell in. Faster than both the PS2 and Wii which were just behind. It took PS2 a total of five years and 9 months. PS4 was just 5 years and 7 months.”
When you think about it, it is amazing that PlayStation 4s are still selling this well this late in the console’s life cycle. After all, it is possible that PlayStation 5 will release as soon as November of next year. A lot of gamers are already busy saving up for the PS5 so that they can buy it as soon as it comes out.
