Obsidian Entertainment Announces New Next-Gen RPG ‘Avowed’

Today, as part of Microsoft’s big Xbox Showcase event, Obsidian Entertainment revealed that they are working on an all-new, next-gen RPG; Avowed. The studio, most recently known for The Outer Worlds, and which is currently working on Grounded, didn’t reveal much about the new project. However, they did show off a teaser trailer:

Obsidian Entertainment’s Next Big RPG: Avowed

Since their acquisition by Microsoft in 2018, Obsidian Entertainment has primarily focused on big RPG projects. The Outer Worlds was the first of these, launching in October of last year, followed by Grounded; an upcoming survival game which will be launching in September. When Grounded was announced, some fans were concerned that Obsidian was moving away from RPGs, but today, the studio confirmed that isn’t the case. As it turns out, they have been working on their next RPG for some time already, suggesting that Grounded may just be a side-project.

At present, we don’t know much about Avowed, indicating that it’s likely still in the early stages of development. The teaser trailer was cinematic, of course, although the end did give a hint at what gameplay might look like; first-person and somewhat reminiscent of Elder Scrolls and other classic fantasy RPGs, to be specific. The game will be set in a fantasy world called Eora, but thus far, Obsidian has yet to reveal anything more.

What we do know, however, is that Avowed is being built from the ground up for next-gen consoles. It’s unknown when it might launch, as the trailer made no mention of a release date. Given the lack of details, it’s likely that Avowed is still years away from launch. As such, it’s unlikely to launch any earlier than late 2021, and 2022 might still be more likely. Regardless, fans will probably have to wait for some time before they hear more about Obsidian’s next big project. In the meanwhile, their more comedic survival game Grounded will be launching out of beta later this year.
